Hook Norton Football Club History
The Chipping Norton and District League folded in the early 1950s and the club moved to the Banbury and District League, in the bottom division of which it stayed for many years. In the early 1980s, Keith Willis moved to the village: he had played at senior non league level, and under his managership, the club`s attitude to the game was transformed. It shot through the divisions of the Banbury and District League, and won the Oxfordshire Junior Shield in 1987. In 1997, the Club was promoted to the Oxfordshire Senior League Division 1, achieving promotion to the Premier Division after only one season. In the same season it won the Oxfordshire Intermediate Cup. The season 1999/2000 produced the premier Division Championship and the Oxfordshire Charity Cup for the Club, and in season 2000/01 the club retained the Oxfordshire Senior League Premier Division title. As a result, the club was promoted to Hellenic League Division 1 West and achieved the distinction of becoming champions at the first attempt—and by a margin of 9 points. Promotion to the Hellenic League Premier Division was the result. While there were no more championships, the 1st team reached the final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup against Oxford City (a Ryman League club) which was played at the Kassam stadium in Oxford, and which we lost 3-2 to a golden goal three minutes from the end of the second period of extra time! A further season in the Premier Division followed, but the club was, sadly, compulsorily demoted to Division 1 West for season 2004/5 as it had proved impossible to get planning permission for floodlights. Planning permission for lights has now been obtained, and it is hoped that these will be in place in time for season 2007/8. The previous season started with celebration, as on Friday 21st July the Club was presented with the prestigious FA Charter Standard Award. The Award was presented to the Club in recognition of its successful efforts over the previous 12 months having the team managers successfully qualify as football coaches to at least Level 1 Standard. Managers and Club officials were trained in Child Protection procedures, and were screened by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and deemed to be suitable to look after the interests of players under 18 years of age. In addition, the Award allows the Club to carry the Three Lions’ logo, was presented in recognition of the Club up-dating its constitution and for introducing codes of conduct not only for its players but also for its club officials, supporters and parents. Ben Spiero (with the help of Karlton stratford) continues as first team manger, and the club intends to make a mark on their return to the Hellenic League Premier Division. |
